Karewa Formation and Saffron Cultivation
Karewas are unique lacustrine (lake-based) deposits found in the Valley of Kashmir, formed during the Pleistocene period. These flat-topped tablelands are world-famous for the cultivation of Zafran (Saffron), a GI-tagged product. The Pampore region is known as the 'Saffron Town of Kashmir'. Apart from saffron, this distinct soil structure is also highly suitable for growing Almonds and walnuts.
