India’s First Forest University Rises in Gorakhpur

India will set up its first-ever Forest University in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, marking a major boost to specialised environmental education outside metro cities. The university will come up on a 125-acre campus near the Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre, enabling strong field-based learning and wildlife research integration.
Announced by CM Yogi Adityanath, the project has received a ₹50 crore allocation in the 2024 UP Budget, with the draft Act under final review before DPR approval and construction.
Academically, it will focus on forestry, wildlife studies, agroforestry, ecology, climate change, and environmental sustainability, prioritising practical exposure over conventional classroom models.
With hostels for ~500 students and advanced research infrastructure, the university is envisioned as a national hub for conservation training and sustainable forest management aligned with environmental governance goals.
