India Launches BharatGen Sovereign AI Drive
India established the BharatGen Technology Foundationat IIT Bombay (Powai) on 7 November 2025 to build a sovereign Large Language Model tailored to India’s multilingual landscape, targeting over 22 Indian languages across text and speech.
The initiative expands IIT's role into national-scale AI development, aiming to capture regional accents, scripts and cultural communication patterns.
Strong central backing includes Rs 235 crore from the Department of Science & Technology and Rs 1,058 crore from MeitY under the IndiaAI Mission, enabling rapid movement from research to deployable systems.
A consortium of leading IITs and IIITs will develop lightweight distilled models to help startups and researchers access advanced AI without high computational costs.
Aligned with India’s vision of a sovereign digital backbone, BharatGen seeks to create scalable language technologies that strengthen national AI infrastructure and democratise innovation.
