India-Africa Trade Expansion Strategy for 2030 Growth
India aims to deepen economic engagement with African states to diversify markets beyond Western economies whose demand has slowed, noting that in FY24 India’s exports to Africa were ~$38.17 billion with major destinations including Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania, and Africa already being India’s fourth-largest trading partner; although India remains one of Africa’s largest investors, China’s footprint exceeds India’s with >20% of African imports from China in 2024, highlighting the need for strategic policy shifts.
A proposed five-point strategy to achieve an India–Africa trade target by 2030 focuses on negotiating preferential trade agreements and comprehensive economic partnerships with regional blocs such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), expanding two-way value-added and joint-venture manufacturing, improving access for MSMEs through better Lines of Credit and trade finance, and reducing freight and logistics costs via port modernisation and connectivity.
India should also leverage strengths in IT, healthcare, professional services and skill development to boost services exports and people-to-people links, and address barriers including bureaucratic hurdles, political risk and financing costs for medium-term Africa projects
