IIT Delhi’s AILA: India’s First AI Scientist for Labs

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has developed an advanced artificial intelligence agent named AILA (Artificially Intelligent Laboratory Agent), capable of autonomously conducting scientific experiments in laboratories, marking a major leap in India’s AI-driven research ecosystem.
Unlike conventional automation tools, AILA can independently design, execute, and adapt experiments in real time, closely mimicking human decision-making during lab work, thereby reducing human intervention and error.
The agent can control laboratory instruments and devices, analyse experimental data on the fly, and modify protocols based on outcomes, enhancing efficiency, reproducibility, and speed of scientific discovery.
This innovation aligns with India’s broader push towards AI-led research, Industry 4.0, and deep-tech self-reliance, strengthening academic–industrial research capabilities.
The development positions IIT Delhi as a national leader in autonomous scientific research systems , with potential applications in drug discovery, materials science, chemical engineering, and advanced manufacturing, and contributes to India’s long-term vision under Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat by integrating AI into core scientific infrastructure.
