Bangladesh on verge of Civil War

Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, ordered a nationwide security clampdown after fresh unrest triggered by the shooting of youth leader Sharif Osmann Hadi in Dhaka.
The government announced the second phase of Operation Devil Hunt, a nationwide security operation aimed at curbing illegal arms and political violence.
Operation Devil Hunt was first launched in February 2025 following violent protests and targeted supporters of the disbanded Awami League.
The unrest has electoral implications, as Hadi is linked to the July Uprising, the student-led movement that toppled the Hasina government and led to the formation of the interim regime in Bangladesh.
Authorities announced enhanced protection for “July fighters” and election candidates, including return and issuance of firearm licences, highlighting deep security anxieties ahead of the February 2026 general elections.
The episode underscores Bangladesh’s fragile political transition marked by banned parties, election violence, and expanded use of internal security operations.
