Armenia’s Rare Butterfly Becomes Face of Global Biodiversity Talks

Armenia has unveiled the official logo of COP17 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), featuring the Erivan Anomalous Blue butterfly (Polyommatus eriwanensis), highlighting the link between local endemism and global conservation goals.
Endemic to Armenia and named after Yerevan (Erivan), this Rare Blue butterfly is found only in southern Transcaucasia, inhabiting calcareous grasslands at elevations of 1,200–2,200 metres and flying for just one generation annually between mid-June and mid-July.
Although absent from the Global and European IUCN Red Lists, it is classified as Endangered in Armenia’s Red Book of Animals (2010), with parts of its range overlapping the Khosrov Forest State Reserve and Gnishik Protected Landscape.
Butterflies act as indicator species, and the species’ unknown larval host plant and uncertain population trends underline conservation gaps.
Scheduled for October 2026 in Yerevan, COP17’s theme, “Taking action for nature”, is visually reinforced through a logo using 23 blended colours, symbolising the interdependence of the 23 global biodiversity targets .
